TALK ON TRAFFIC AWARENESS

In India, the rising number of traffic accidents has become a major concern for the general populace. Despite the fact that several laws and guidelines were passed to improve road safety in the nation, many of them have not been successful. In order for people to grow up to be responsible citizens, it is crucial to instil a sense of responsibility in them from a young age about traffic laws. Road safety regulations apply to everyone, including pedestrians, cyclists, and other users of the road. One must pay close attention to traffic sign boards while driving and follow them with patience and consideration. This reduces traffic congestion and aids in keeping people safe from potential accidents on the highways.

In light of this, on December 21, 2022, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, in General Hall 1 of the institution, the Natural Science Association of GCTE organised a Traffic Awareness Class in partnership with IQAC. Senior Civil Police Officer Mr. Yethy Prakash NL oversaw the meeting. He used anecdote to convey the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. It was an interactive workshop that was also quite helpful. He distributed several leaflets with guidelines for driving safely.

Traffic signs are crucial bits of knowledge that can guarantee both our safety and the safety of those around us. Accident risk can be reduced by understanding traffic laws. Road conditions are indicated via traffic indicators. They not only facilitate efficient traffic flow but also instruct and forewarn drivers on proper road behaviour. Drivers who are aware of the points of entry, departure, turns, and other road conditions beforehand thanks to traffic signs naturally make fewer errors and get to their destinations more easily. In India, any person applying for a driving licence is required to be familiar with road safety signs and traffic signals. They need to go through a written/oral test in order to obtain the driving licence. There are primarily three types of traffic signs that everyone should be aware of. They are the Mandatory traffic signs like 'One Way', 'No Entry', and 'Overtaking Prohibited'; Cautionary traffic signs that warn road users in advance about potential hazards and dangers on the roads like 'Steep Ascent', 'School Ahead', 'Narrow Road', and 'Dangerous Dip' ; and Informatory traffic signs that help road users with information about the directions, distance, destinations, alternative routes, and important locations such as schools, hospitals, public toilets, and more as for instance, 'Right Hand Curve', 'Pedestrian Crossing', 'Cattle' and more. All these essential topics under traffic awareness were dealt with in the session.
