CHIRANTHANA - DAY 4
15 February 2024 was the fourth day of our Community Living Camp. The day commenced with the customary aerobics class at 6:30 am by Ms. Jithi J.G., the physical instructor at CET. This early morning practice allowed the participants to energize themselves. After breakfast, each group presented the camp news, and some were called to share their experiences of the camp days.
The first session was titled "Parayunnu Paadunnu" and was led by the famous poet Gireesh Puliyoor. This was one of the best sessions of the camp. With his poems and fiery statements, he captivated our minds. He began the session by reciting one of his poems that criticized the stigma around menstruation. Most of his poems resonate with the idea of fighting for good. He made us repeat the poems after him, because of which I still remember a few lines. Each poem of his is noted for its lyrical quality and simple diction. Gireesh Puliyoor sir also donated his anthology Karinkuyilum Kanivellariyum to our college library, which was received by Dr Anju I, on behalf of our college. This was followed by lunch break.
After the lunch break, we had planned an Institutional visit to the Indian Institute of Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. We started our journey to IIST at 1:45 pm. All of us were very excited about it and we thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Most of us were surprised as well as amazed to see the huge IIST campus. IIST is a government-aided institute and deemed university for the study and research of space science. Mr. Umesh Khadane sir welcomed us to the institution and gave a talk on ‘the art and science of learning’. His pleasant nature seized our attention who also shared his experiences of teaching at various universities. He discussed the importance of the ‘art of learning’ amidst the scientific teaching which encourages active learning and data-driven assessments. The art of teaching connotes those elements in instruction that cannot be entirely measured, quantified, or shown to have outcomes. He emphasized the importance of a teacher in orchestrating the subtle strings of classroom dynamics and student expectations in learning. This helps in creative freedom in teaching through the language of art alongside terms of science. Bhagya Murali of the English department extended a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Mr. Umesh Khadane sir for his valuable time and insightful words. After a short break, we headed to visit three labs dedicated to space science and research, where the research scholars welcomed us and gave a detailed explanation of the workings of the labs. Though we couldn’t comprehend it fully, we were happy that it gave us a chance to understand the real struggles and efforts behind all the innovations. Keerthana Anil of the Maths department thanked all the coordinators who arranged this institution visit, the faculties who permitted us to the institution, and the research scholars of IIST who gave us a warm welcome. She also mentioned how thrilled we were and how this visit would be etched in our hearts forever. We left the campus by 5:45 pm. We reached Grameena Padana Kendram around 6:30 and after a short break, everyone started practicing for the cultural programs, while some were busy preparing the camp news.
Around 8:45 pm the cultural programs began with a mesmerizing performance by Bhagya Murali and Parvathy S. It was followed by different group and solo performances. An unforgettable moment was when Anju ma’am sang a beautiful song for us. None of us had ever heard her sing and it left us surprised. How beautifully she sang! Another notable performance was the impromptu role play by Sibana S. and Praveen Kumar who recreated the iconic scene of Ganga and Nakulan from the movie Manichithrathaazhu. Though there were not many programs planned at first, the energy and reception of each performance gave everyone the confidence to perform something which led the event till 1:00 am. It was the last night at the camp, and I am sure that every one of us enjoyed it to the fullest and left to our rooms with a heart full of wonderful memories by 1:30 am
