PHASE 2- DAY 18
On 05-07-2024, Friday, I was able to conduct a grammar based lesson for 8B students. Teacher chose the model direct instruction for the same. Since the topic was pronoun, the teacher checked their knowledge about nouns. Learners were confused when the teacher suddenly changed her way of teaching. From their definition of the noun, the teacher understood their misconceptions about the topic. I found that many students were of the belief that there will be only one noun and verb in a sentence and the teacher had to take an additional effort to make them restructure their definition about nouns.
Teacher also understood that even though it was easier for them to understand the concept of pronouns and the different types of pronouns, they were not able to apply them without mistakes. Moreover, the teacher realised that the learners were pre-occupied with the structure of the class, which she elucidated in the beginning since DI model demanded it. Teacher considered it as a faulty move and decided to ignore such steps in future.
Learners were also baffled about the disparity between nouns like joy and the adjective joyful which the teacher tried to alleviate. Teacher also found that the task of making the learners understand the grammatical categories and usages as a herculean task. Since the DI model gives more autonomy to the teacher, the learners found it very difficult. Some students even complained the teacher, after the class, that they feared to ask the doubt. Teacher realised the need for giving daily dosages of grammar to 8B students. I also analysed that DI model is more suitable for higher secondary students. The class went good leaving the teacher with doubts.
