PHASE 1 - DAY 31 (Second Observation)

On 06-12-2023, I engaged 8 C students during the 3rd hour. Omanasheelan sir came to observe my class for the second time. I was a bit tensed but remained calm and composed as I was sure that the pedagogy of Omanasheelan sir was not suitable for my 8C students. Still, I did my preparation well. I prepared the powerpoint slides, three charts and flash cards for doing the word study. Before the class I just revisited the pedagogy of Omanasheelan Sir again. The teacher was dealing with the chapter "The Merchant of Venice".

In the introductory session, teacher decided to give the images of some Malayalam movies related to friendship. Since the 3rd hour was immediately after the break, many students came late but sir was there before the time and as per the instruction of the sir, I started the class after 2 or 3 minutes after the bell rang. Many students who came late and unaware of the presence of the sir, used their normal music like tone in asking "May I come in teacher" and the immediate shock when they saw the sir was like relief to the teacher. Before the class Poornima gave a comic style All the Best to the teacher, which made her realize how much they value me.

When the teacher showed them the images of the films, many students recognised it, and this helped in the smooth transition of the class. I found Omanasheelan sir also a bit more interested. After this I used a conceal reveal chart to introduce the writer, William Shakespeare.  All the students read the chart actively. Teachers selected random students from each bench, to do this. Teacher reading was done in an excellent manner and when the students were instructed to do silent reading, teacher found them making noise bit by bit. Teacher then cleared their difficult words using the word replacement-situational sentences she had prepared in the PowerPoint and gave the meaning of the word using flashcards. After the word study, teacher divided the class into four groups and gave the scaffolding questions in the chart. Since the teacher was very much aware of the ability of the students, she didn't expect much. But to the surprise of the teacher all the group's presented their answers in a good manner. Fouth group, led by Nithya showed a marked difference in the answers they wrote. Teacher was really happy. Reinforcement was given at each stage. To check the individual understanding of the learners, teacher then asked some questions individually. The answers to the scaffolding questions were given in the power point slide and Omanasheelan sir took a picture of one of the slides and this made the teacher a bit nervous but at the same time confident.  Since the time was approaching, teacher decided to do the final activity. Teacher shuffled the small charts to each group and asked the learner to find the quality which suits the characters.  Poornima came with a wrong answer and the teacher gave her another chance to find the correct answer with the help of her group members. This made Omanasheelan sir laugh. Teacher was able to complete the entire class as planned with the co-operation of students.  Teacher felt really satisfying after the class. Teacher felt confident in applying new pedagogy and her hope in 8C students improved all of a sudden. Teacher believes that the 1st observation in 9A was okay but the 2ndvone with 8C was really satisfying. Overall the class went good. But the teacher forgot to do the loud reading session, which she found as a mistake on her part.

Omanasheelan Sir was quite impressed by my class. He asked me to take this class for the external examination (Viva). This comment really made me surprised. He even told that it was an ideal class and that really made me think the way I have come so far with 8c students from Day 1 to day 31. This was really an unforgettable day in my Phase I teaching practice.
