PHASE 1 - Day 9

On 03-11-2023, Friday, 5th period I was able to take a class with 9 A students. We started a new poem "On Killing a Tree" by Gieve Patel. In the introduction, the teacher asked the learners about the need for and importance of trees and checked their awareness about the issues faced by our environment. Teacher was much surprised when the learners talked about soil erosion and the recent rain which led to flood in many places. I found it really easy to capture and maintain the attention of students. Though the students responded in Malayalam, teacher helped them translate it into English. The learners showed much readiness to learn but the teacher was unable to handle the class. Many students were talking in between, and the teacher found some difficulty in taking the class. They showed interest when the teacher showed them the jack fruit seed. Throughout the class, the teacher made effective use of videos to explain each and every line of the poem. Teacher used animation videos to explain the growth a tree and its life cycle

I realised that teaching needs a continuous connection and working with the students, which was the working I lacked with 9 A thing I students. In this class, since the poem and fits theme was easy for the students to relate, they actively asked their doubts. Sai Darshana and Vaishnavi were able to identify the figures of speech in stanza of the poem. I understood that bringing specimens to the class is an effective method to teach children For the first time I felt satisfied with the way I took class in 9A.
