PHASE 1 - Day 10
On 6-11-2023, Monday, I had 1st hour in 9B. As Nimmy teacher was on leave, I had to start "Jungle Air Crash" for 9 B students. I was not able to establish a rapport with them as they were not cordial enough to the new teacher. But I found many students the class studious and above average. They were familiar with the meaning of many difficult words which surprised the teacher. I handled the class with ease.
During the third hour I continued the lessons "A Day in the Country" with 8C students. The students were engaging with the chapter well. They were now familiar with all the characters in the story. As demonstrative ways of word study created more impact, the teacher used it in this class also. Comprehension was done interactively. Loud reading was also conducted in an effective way. The class went good with everyone's participation and responses.
In the 5th hour, I engaged 9A students. We tried to continue with the 2nd stanza of the poem "On Killing a Tree". Teacher was much satisfied with the responses when she checked their previous knowledge. On this day, the teacher did a lot of homework to produce a desried outcome in the students. Teacher felt very satisfied with her hard work. Teacher gathered the specimens of leperous hide and bleeding back from her house and presented it before the students. I found the students astounded and restless until the teacher allowed them to touch the specimens. On this day, I felt myself as a science teacher rather than an English teacher. I understood the student's interest in real objects and how these can be used to simplify even the hardest terms and phrases.
The teacher also made a video of the 2nd stanza of the poem and the word study was done effectively with the help of pictures and videos. For the activity I prepared a chart in which I illustrated the cutting of a tree through a simple drawing. The curiosity of the learners were increased when the teacher asked them to write the last thoughts of the tree before it is being killed by looking at the activity chart. Teacher was surprised to see the answer of one group, which was very creative and thought provoking.
During the 6th hour. I engaged 8B students and we started the poem "The Song of the Flower." The students were very cooperative and they were able to answer all the comprehension questions.
