PHASE 1 - Day 4
On 12-10-2023, Thursday, I was able to take a class with IX A students in the first hour. During the class I got more answers from the students but I was in a hurry to cover the portions as the teacher instructed me to do so. I continued with the lesson "The Jungle Air Crash". Since it was a class of 44 students, the teacher found it very difficult to give all the student's her individual attention. Most of them listened carefully but many of them were afraid to respond in English. Athulya was unable to read, write and speak and comprehend English. So the teacher decided to give an elbow friend to make her lessons easy. Even though the girls of IX A were mischievous, they were obedient. The basic problem of the class was that many students lacked reading skills even in 9th standard. I understood that the task before me is really hard and the need to include more simple English words and preparation of novel teaching aids are the need of the hour.
Teacher understood that the preparation of such kinds of teaching aids are worth time consuming and need a lot of mental preparation. The teacher also realised that the invention of some innovate methods is also very much essential to teach a bunch of students who lacked basic LSRW skills. After the class the teacher collected the names of the students and decided to divide the class into groups.
In the afternoon session, I was able to handle 8 C. It was surprising that the students were interested to see me in the class. That was really welcoming. Some students became very friendly to me. In that class we tried to study the poetic devices - simile and metaphor and I used models of teaching to do the same. Some students knew what a simile and metaphor meant but many of them were unaware. The students listened carefully, and they actively participated in all the grammar activities and exercises which the teacher gave. I was able to complete my lesson plan and it was a satisfying class.
