Teaching Practice PHASE 1: Day 1 - Fish Out Of The Bowl

Today was the first day of teaching practice. After a week long struggle of selecting the school, I joined CHINNAMMA MEMORIAL GIRLS HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL. We reached the school by 9 am, signed the register and went to the room which was allotted for us. It was with much anticipation that I spend each and every moment. It was really hard for me to adjust to the new surroundings. I was constantly in the state of a fish out of the bowl.

I was assigned two periods on that day one with 9A students and the other with 8C students. In 8 C I started with an interaction and rapport building since I was a new face for them. The teacher in charge of  Ms. Nimmy was also there. I talked to them entirely in English. But it was very difficult for the students to follow. Some said they were unable to understand anything. This shattered me a lot and I was totally shocked. Since it was my first class I used only simple English but they insisted me to speak in Malayalam. So I was forced to use the method of code switching. Students were not at all interacting and it was totally against my expectations. When asked to do self-introduction many students were unable to construct one full sentence. Four or five students presented it nicely. I found that many students were afraid to speak in English. I was totally depressed as the situation was out of my expectation. How to teach these children was the biggest question I faced. Since they were 36 in number, I divided the class into 6 groups and selected 6 students as the leader of each group. The inhibition and fear of speaking English and the hostility towards the language was expressed by many. Though I encouraged the children to speak in small sentences they did not made any effort. With a saddened heart, I left the class.

In class IX A, I introduced myself and started to take the class directly as the teacher in charge insisted me to complete the lesson which I start before leaving for the semester 2 examination. I started with Unit 4, The Dawn of Hope and "Jungle Air Crash" was my assigned lesson I was able to observe that, some students were very studious and they were actively responding but only when insisted. Many students kept quiet. Since unit 4 was included in Part II text book, none of the students brought the text and to my goodness, I had the digital version of the textbook and with the help of the projector I was able to show it to them. I found the students manageable but they also insisted me to speak in malayalam, since the class contained 4 or 5 malayalam medium students. I used PowerPoint slides to make my class engaging. The student's were receptive but they showed a fear towards the language. Since the period was in the afternoon session, I got only 35 minutes and many students came to the class late after the short break, I was unable to complete my lesson plan.

From my experience in the first day I understood that the task before me is really hard and challenging. The teacher has to change her ideas and pedagogy to suit the students of 8 C and IX A. This was something I found really difficult and I even thought of getting another chance to change the school. It was a day of realisations as the teacher understood the present condition of many government and aided schools and those of the students across the district. The teacher also decided to plan new strategies to make the children interact and respond.
