SCHOOL INDUCTION DAY 3: AN AIR OF RELAXATION
On the third day of the school induction programme, 6th January 2023, we, the first semester teacher trainees from GCTE, Thycaud, reached Govt Girls HSS, Peroorkada by 9:15 am. Classes began after a prayer.
Myself and Ms.Kavya Dinesh were allocated a class on the poem "My Grandmother's House" by Kamala Das from Class VIII English Reader for the fourth hour and we discussed about it and improvised the lesson plan for the topic which we had prepared beforehand. It was an ICT lesson plan. We engaged the four hour for the eight standard learners. The introduction to the poem was done by Ms.Kavya using two video clips on grandmothers' love for their grandchildren. The students helped her in connecting the laptop to the projector since the downloaded videos could not be decoded by the system, she used the laptop itself to display the videos to the students turn-wise, in groups. They were then asked to comment on the video clips and also asked whether they could relate to the same. Then she proceeded to familiarise them with the poet Kamala Das. After that I dealt with the poem per se, cleared their doubts, taught them new and difficult words and concluded the class. Since there happened to be an intrusion it became somewhat impossible to complete the entire lesson plan. Unlike the IXth standard students for which we engaged classes the previous day, we found the VIII standard pupils less active and interactive. We had to poke them again and again to get responses even to simple open ended questions. The class came to an end at 12:40pm.
After the class we visited the noon food serving place near the kitchen and the teachers asked us to serve the food in the following two days. We devoted the afternoon session to collect data related to laboratory facilities namely the chemistry lab, physics lab, biology lab and ghe IT lab in the school. We then had a conversation with the Psycho-social school councillor.
During the last period, we got an opportunity to observe a tenth level Chemistry class on the topic 'Non-metals' handled by the teacher trainee Ms. Arpita from Mar Theophilus B.Ed Training College and we tried to understand the teaching strategies she applied to make the class effective and interesting. We were given a class analysis sheet which we filled in and handed over to Ms. Arpitha. We left the college by 3:35 pm after the National Anthem.
